Computer Information Science

The Computer Information Science Cybersecurity Curriculum is designed to prepare graduates for employment in Information Technology. The central focus of the program of study is on the design, management and hardening of computer networks, but also has specific strands devoted to helping students understand today's modern virtualized server infrastructures, database tools, and website development. The goal is to help student develop a broad toolbox of skills and experience needed to make them attractive applicants for entry- and mid-level IT positions.

Coursework in this program will include network and security foundations, data recovery techniques, network vulnerability assessments, as well as windows and security administrations. Linux, Microsoft and Apple operating systems will be used intensively during students' enrollment. Graduates will be well positioned to study for and obtain the following industry standard certifications:  CIsco Certified Entry Network Technician (CCENT), Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) Routing and Switching, Palo Alto Networks Certified Cybersecurity Associate (PCCSA), Palo Alto Networks Certified Network Security Administrator (PCNSA), CompTIA A+, CompTIA Network+ and CompTIA Security+

Network Administration

TVCC recently celebrated 20 years of partnering with Cisco's Networking Academy. This curriculum takes students from the initial concepts of how networks operate, through the principles of switched and routed network traffic, to the advanced topics of designing, implementing and managing complex multi-site computer networks. Students learn how to configure and troubleshoot routers and switches, segment networks to optimize traffic, and deal with the added complexity of blending both wired and wireless network technologies. Network security principles are introduced in this coursework, and extends directly into TVCC's cybersecurity courses.

Web Development

The range of technology and platforms which make information available on the Internet continues to increase exponentially. TVCC's curriculum offerings aim to expose students to current tools used to manage websites such as WordPress, as well as more foundational tools such as HTML5, CSS and Javascript. The goal is to ensure that students can develop their own presence on the World Wide Web, as well as assist other individual and organizations with their web-based communications; specific attention will be devoted to making content accessible to the wide range of platforms used by today's consumers, from traditional web browsers to mobile applications.

TVCC has partnered with Palo Alto Networks, an industry-leading cybersecurity vendor, to train students with the conceptual and technical skills to succeed in today's rapidly changing cybersecurity environment. Topics covered include strategies for network defense, security methodologies, analysing network traffic flows, recognizing and remediating vulnerabilities, malware blocking, and developing and implementing organizational policies to manage cybersecurity.

Database Development

Databases underpin today's most prevalent technolgies. Search engines and e-commerce websites use massive datastores to gather and organize data; personalized recommendations and trending topics are the result of sophisticated queries that filter datasets to give us actionable information. TVCC's database curriculum takes students from the beginning concepts of Structured Query Language (SQL) through advanced database operations such as user-developed functions and stored procedures and finishes with a project-based capstone course which leads them through the entire creation and implementation of a small enterprise database application.

Datacenter Administration

A decade ago, students preparing for an IT career frequently studied "desktops" and "servers" as distinct end-user technologies; today, virtualization and cloud-based software services have transformed the datacenter, and mobile technologies such as tablets, smartphones and the Internet of Things are now pervasive considerations for IT departments. TVCC's curriculum continues to prepare students for established industry certifications such as the CompTIA and Microsoft certifications, but also uses current virtualization technologies such as VMWare Workstation and Microsoft Hyper-V to illustrate how system administrators segment and compartmentalize their server infrastructure to optimize performance and hardware utilization.
