Treasure Valley Community College offers a 1-year certificate for medical billing and coding. The Billing & Coding Specialist teaches students to compile, process, and maintain medical records of hospital and clinic patients in a manner consistent with medical, administrative, ethical, legal, and regulatory requirements of the health care system.

According to the National Health Career Association, the skills learned through medical coding certification are essential to hospitals, physician offices, surgery centers, nursing homes, dental offices, home healthcare agencies, mental health facilities and even insurance companies and consulting firms. This rewarding field requires a high level of professionalism and dependability. Tasks performed could include.
- Gathering/reviewing essential information
- Verifying required documentation before patient information is released
- Preventing fraud/abuse by auditing billing
- Supporting coding and billing process
- Assigning codes for diagnoses and procedures
- Submitting claims for reimbursement
- Auditing billing
- Coaching healthcare providers to achieve optimal reimbursement
Job outlook from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, Medical records specialists compile, process, and maintain patient files. Job outlook for employment of medical records specialists is projected to grow 9 percent from 2023 to 2033, much faster than the average for all occupations.
About 15,000 openings for medical records specialists are projected each year, on average, over the decade. Many of those openings are expected to result from the need to replace workers who transfer to different occupations or exit the labor force, such as to retire.

Office Administration – Medical Office
Treasure Valley Community College offers an AAS in Office Administration – Medical Office. This degree prepares students for a career in a medical office. The Medical Office Administration program provides solid groundwork in medical office procedures, foundation office skills, medical terminology, medical billing, coding, transcription, and computer training. medical coursework provides a wide background from an introductory medical billing course to an advanced medical transcription course. The student entering this program is preparing for immediate employment in a medical office environment to include hospitals, clinics, and doctors' offices.
Job outlook from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, perform secretarial duties using specific knowledge of medical terminology and hospital, clinic, or laboratory procedures. Duties may include scheduling appointments, billing patients, and compiling and recording medical charts, reports, and correspondence. In addition, most medical and health services work in healthcare facilities, including hospitals and nursing homes, and group medical practices.
